  1. Luca: I think he lives but is in a different state of being because he starts to hear music (Page 179) and I think he has found "Elsewhere".

  2. Kate- I think Jonas dies at the end of the book. When you die or are dying, you are flushed with happy memories. On page 177, it said he suddenly became happy and remembered the Giver, Fiona, Asher, his parents, and his sister. When Jonas hears music on page 179, he thinks it may only have been an echo. Maybe he was entering Elsewhere, and Elsewhere may be heaven.

  3. I think at the end of the Giver Jonas is dying. I think this because at the end when he's on the sled he thinks he sees a family in a living room. The family was just like the memory the Giver transferred to him. I think all his memories are flashing before his eyes. The giver said that after a Receiver of Memories dies all their memories get washed away back to the town. Therefore i think he is about to die.

  4. I think that Jonas dies at the end of the book because on page 178 it says, "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness" then ,after that it says, "For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard singing." This shows examples of his happy memories passing by as he dies.

  5. I think that Jonas dies at the end because the entire trip after he got out of the community was deserted. He was starting to get cold and he had fallen on his bicycle and hurt his leg. He had been searching for Elsewhere for days and was starting to run out of food and memories. I think he was delusional and he was starting to die. He gives all of his energy to make it up the hill and then suddenly there is a sled waiting for him to ride. It sounds very fake to me. Then he sleds into the Giver's favorite memory. That doesn't sound right. Sadly, I think that Jonas dies.

  6. I think that Jonas dies because on page 179 it says,"He heard people singing." When people are dying they go from the misery of dying to happy memories, like singing. This is exactly what Jonas experienced.

  7. I think Jonas might be dying in chapter 23. In chapter 23, it seems as if Jonas and Gabriel are reaching Elsewhere. I figure if you want to enter Elsewhere, you must be dead. Therefore, Jonas and Gabriel may slowly be dying as they come closer. When Jonas and Gabriel ride the sled down the hill (page 178), Jonas sees lights and celebration and hears music. Perhaps Jonas is seeing Elsewhere, where everything and everybody is pleasant and different from the community. Therefore, I believe Jonas may be dying in chapter 23.

  8. I think Jonas lives because on page 178 it said "Jonas felt himself losing consciousness." He might be close to dying but not yet because he didn't lose consciousness.

  9. I think that Jonas dies before the hill, when he starts to feel all happy inside. I think it would be a little too coincidental if he miraculously found a sled waiting at a hill that he rides down into a town celebrating Christmas. I think he's hallucinating his past memories.

  10. Although I am not sure, I think that Jonas does die at the end of The Giver. I think this because he starts to see the memories in real life, and he is feeling very warm when it is very cold outside. When you are about to die of hypothermia, you get very warm and happy, like Jonas did in the book. I think the music was another one of the memories, along with the animals, because it was very cold and there was a very unlikely chance that animals would be roaming the grounds at that time. End of statement.

  11. Nic- I think Jonas dies at the end of the Giver because on page 178 Jonas claims he sees light and he is loosing conciseness. When people are dying they say that they see a bright light. I think Jonas is dead because I think he finally gives up n himself from all the hard effort and he just gives up. But he also says on 178 he opens his eyes and he thinks he reached Elsewhere.

  12. I think that Jonas lived because on page 176 of The Giver it says that Jonas' "mind was alert". That leads me to know that he is using his last will in his fragile body. It says that all of a sudden he started walking faster. I think he will be nearly dead by the time he has sled down the hill.

  13. I feel that Jonas died, but he died happy. I knew he was happy because on the last page it said he finally heard music, and he didn't hear it in the "community". The music is happiness. He realized he had made his own memories. I think he made it to Elsewhere. Elsewhere is like a heaven, a place where you go after you die.

  14. I think that Jonas finally made it to Elsewhere because he says he's finally making a memory of his own (177). I believe he dies in the end. People say when you die all the happiness in your life flows through you. On page 177, Lois Lowry says Jonas starts to feel happy. He remembers his friends, family, the Giver, and his life before he became the Receiver. Therefore, I think he's dead by the end of the book. At least he made Elsewhere though.
