  1. Luca: I think Russell Baker valued in "No Gumption" was that competition isn't for everyone. I think Annie Dillard valued the thrill in "The Chase". I relate more with Dillard because I like thrill a lot.

  3. Russell Backer liked to just sit at home and read comic books. I thing Annie values being outside with her friends and playing different kinds of sports. I relate to Annie more because I love being outside with friends playing and learning different sports.

  4. I think that Russel Baker values the freedom to follow his dream. He didn't want to be a journalist, but he wanted to be a writer. In the end, he became a writer. I think that Annie Dillard values fun and likes to be involved in activities that boys do. She plays football and throws snow at cars. I relate to Dillard because I have been in the same situation before. I had hit a Mercedes with a pinecone and broken the window. Luckily they were not mad at me and forgave me.

  5. I think that Russell Baker values determining his own future. I don't think that he enjoyed his mother always pushing him. I believe he wanted to pursue his dreams and not his mother's. I think that adventure and thrill. A girl who throws snowballs ,and plays football must like to have quite the trill and exhilaration.

  6. Maggie- In my opinion, Russell valued a good book, and quiet. He didn't enjoy lots of commotion. On the contrary, Annie Dillard valued determination, sports, and disorder. I think that I am equally like both characters. I value Russell's quiet demeanor, and Annie's gumption.

  7. Russell valued relaxation and doing the minimum. He does not enjoy getting things done like his sister. He rarely gets out of the house and would rather listen to the radio and read comics. Annie values getting things done. She likes to clean the house and be active. I relate this to my brother and I. He is more laid back while I am constantly riding my bike to new places.

  8. Russell Baker thinks if he doesn't sell all of his paper it will be the end of the world. Whatever job is given to him he needs to get done. Annie Dillard thought the experience of being chased was an exhilarated feelings. She never thought badly back again about the chase of the snowball fight. I relate more to No Gumption because I have never been chased by a man before for throwing snowballs, but have been shy about selling girl scout cookies.

  9. Kate- I think that Russell Baker values Doris' persistency. She had gumption, and he didn't. I think that Annie Dillard values the mans determination and persistence. The man could have given up, but he didn't. Dillard thought that only a kid would have that drive and determination. I relate to both of them. I played flag football with the boys, but don't enjoy running for fun. I am shy when it comes to strangers, but I love taking risks, and the concept of all or nothing. I also think that boy's games are more intense and more fun than some girl games.

  10. I think that Russell Baker thought that reading and writing were an import an part of life as a child. It think that Annie values the importance of courage and determination or in Russell's mind,"gumption". Therefore Annie and Russell are very different. Annie and Russell are big opposites and I can't relate to any of them more than the other. In the end though I think I can relate to Russell a little bit more than Annie.

  11. I think Russell Baker from "No Gumption" values individuality. Although Russell's mother forces Russell to work as a paper boy for a journalism company, Russell doesn't have a passion for journalism at all. However, towards the end of "No Gumption", Russell's mom realizes that Russell won't make a name for himself with a journalism career, and that he should be a writer. Russell is delighted with this observation because he doesn't need any gumption to become a writer. I think Annie Dillard in "The Chase" values adventure and thrill. When Annie and her friend, Mikey, are chased through Pittsburgh by a man whom drives a Buick, the chase emits thrill. I relate to Annie Dillard slightly more than Russell Baker. Although I value individuality, thrill is the trait that makes life worth living. Sometimes I regret my actions, but then I lean toward the bright side and say, "At least I made a memorable adventure for myself."

  12. I think that Russell values his abilities and disabilities, and he takes advantage of that. Annie values hard work. I am more like Annie; I try very hard to do things all the time, but unlike Russel, I have gumption.

  13. I think that Russell Baker values that maybe one job just isn't for you, and eventually you'll find the right one. I think Annie Dillard shows to never give up, even when you really want to. I relate to Russell more, not only is he a writer, but he does not do good at talking to strangers and getting into their faces. I am too socially awkward around adult strangers.

  14. I can relate to Russel. One Halloween, I couldn't get much candy because people had run out. Some people would close the door, on me, some would apologize. Others would yell at me for being an "ungrateful brat". That night wasn't as fun as I thought it would be!

  15. One time, I was selling rice crispy treats and lemonade. There was a car at the end of the street, but fairly close to us. I thought he wanted lemonade, so I went up to the car and said would you like some lemonade or a treat. He looked up at me, a bit startled. He said sure and gave more money than I needed and let me keep the change, because I approached him instead of him approaching me. :)

  16. Nic- Russell Baker from "No Gumption" values gumption because his mom convinced him to try have gumption. Russell works so he can have gumption and make his mom happy. Russell Baker is horrible at being a salesman and selling his papers, but his mom forces him to be a news boy. I think Annie Dillard from "The Chase" values the experience of exhilaration and thrill. Annie is a daredevil and takes michevious risks. I relate to Annie from "The Chase" more because I take risks and I like the surprising turn out from what I do.
