The Giver, Ch. 19

Reflecting on the book, what do you think foreshadows the knowledge that Jonas receives in Chapter 19? When did you realize what "release" means? What clues helped you come to that conclusion?

  1. Luca: I think after knowing what release is it changed the whole book. I thought release used to be a good thing but it doesn't seem very good anymore. It was really sad when he killed the twin. I think Jonas will try to escape the community, the clues that helped are he was so sad and probably didn't want anything to do with it anymore. Also it is the classic ending to most books.

  2. In chapter nineteen when I found out what release actually mean't it was really sad because from the start of the I thought that they were just sent to a different town kind of the the Unwanted.

  3. I think that there may be more lies that the community keeps from the people. I realized that being released is being killed, like I had predicted earlier in the book. I wonder how Rosemary knew that she would be killed, because she said that she wished to inject herself? Did The Giver tell her about release? The clues I found to come to the conclusion that they kill people at the release ceremonies because it said the body was motionless, and Jonas said that his father had killed the baby.

  4. Earlier in the book when Jonas was at the House of the Old, the lady sad that they all go Elswhere and are happy when they leave. That might be true that they go to Elswhere(The Empty Room), but it's too good to be true that everything is going to be ok. Especially with the memories Jonas has received.

  5. I found out in chapter 19 when they released one of the twins. They kill the person with a shot, filled with a clear liquid. The main clue that helped me find it was when on page 150, it said "His head fell to his side, his eyes half pen. Then he was still." That helped me come to the conclusion that they kill released people.

  6. I think that now Jonas knows about release he is going to think differently about his world. I realized what it meant when Jonas's dad gave the baby a shot and when it stayed motionless. The clues were when the giver kept telling him to be quiet. The giver was very focused. Then I knew that release wasn't going to a magical land, it is death.

  7. Before reading chapter 19, I believed that release was killing. Release roughly means to let go of, and the nurturers were letting go of the peoples lives. I understand why Jonas' father protected him and Lily from the truth, but I think that the people should die of natural causes. What I didn't realize is that Jonas' father kills the baby. I thought that "Elsewhere" is the place where people go to be killed.

  8. I learned what released means when the giver and Jonas watched the small twin being released by Jonas's dad. I think this is foreshadowing a war coming soon.
I think that is what will happen because the elders and the giver choose Jonas because he is brave. -George

  9. In Chapter 19, Jonas talks about wanting to see the process of Release. The Giver obliges and requests the Hall of Closed Record's receptionist to send the video tape of the morning's twin release. Jonas is surprised to find that the Nurturers inject the babies with a shot, which makes them die. I must say, I was quite surprised as well. I thought they sent the Elders and babies down a chute or through a door and they would live somewhere else. The shot is almost like being put to sleep. Now I have a new question, since now I know how people are released. My question is, who goes to Elsewhere if the babies and Elders don't?

  10. I think the knowledge of release really will change the way Jonas sees the world. I realized what released mea as they put the needle in the boys head. Clues like Rosemary being released helped lead to the conclusion of release. Now I relize more what this book is about.

  11. Kate- I think Elsewhere means something not in our world. Elsewhere was a foreshadow, of where people may go when they are released. I think Elsewhere either means heaven or h-e-l-l. Another foreshadow is how Lois Lowry doesn't capitalize the r in released. I realized what released meant after Jonas' father put the shot in the baby's head. I knew that the community wouldn't release someone after they knew abut the community. They would tell someone after they were released. Also, where would a baby go if they were released into the world.

  12. NIC- I think that when Jonas' dad pulled out the needle and stuck it in to the babies head I knew that something bad was going to happen. I realized that released means to die, but when the old die, in the book it said that they have a celebration so does that mean that they die too? Now that Jonas knows about release he might think of the community differently and of his dad differently. Will Jonas do anything to stop this?

  13. Since Jonas now knows about release, I think he is not going to think the same. I realized that when Jonas's father gave the baby the shot, he was killing the baby. The clues were that The Giver wanted Jonas to listen and be quiet. I thought being released was transporting the babies and Elders to another world. I didn't know it meant death.
