I think that there are two symbols so far in "WTM". One is blackberries, and the other is Pandora's Box. The blackberries represent loneliness and sadness, as well as distant memory. The box represents hope. Also, like a ying yang, it shows that even in all the bad, there is good.
One symbol in WTM is the fireplace in Sal's old house. It represents the stories of Sal and Phoebe, one hidden behind the other. The Pandora story was a metaphor for Sal's life. As much as she wanted to have a perfect world, we cannot have bad without good. Sal had a great early childhood with her parents, and lived in a beautiful place, but she had to endure trauma such as Tulip the stillborn baby, her mom's leaving, and the drama with Phoebe. Maggie
I believe the voices Sal hears are a bit of her mother being channeled into her, as she took the same journey. The messages are a metaphor for the Winterbottom's faults. Maggie
I think that the marriage bed represents love and family. The messages that are left at Phoebe's door always contain advice or a notice. Also, the blackberries in the story always have to do with memories of Sal's mom. -Darcy
A few symbols I see in Walk Two Moons are the singing tree: memories of happiness. Blackberry Kiss: Memories of family The Journal: Memories of love The Lunatic:Scary moments.
the symbols are important to the story in many ways. The maple leave shows that Sal is very connected to nature and the Ben. It is sort of a coincidence that Sal and ben draw the same soul. Without knowing this we do not know that Ben and Sal are connected. This lets us predict that they might have a relation later in the story. -George
I think that blackberries are a symbol of the story when Salamanca was back on the farm with her mother. I think that the fireplace recognized that we had to work hard in order to find what you're looking for. -Matthew Veal
I think a symbol in Walk Two Moons is the trees which Salamanca Tree Hiddle kisses. I think it represents how nature, Sugar Hiddle, and Salamanca Tree Hiddle are all connected. Daniel
Some symbols that I have seen so far in Walk Two Moons are: Blackberries-Sal's Mom: This symbol represents the memories of Sal's Mom and how much Sal misses her mom. Tree-Sal: This symbol represents how much Sal loves nature and especially trees (her middle name is "tree"). I also think that when we learned that Ben and Sal drew the same soul that that is going to be key later on in the story and that Sal and Ben are somehow connected. *Luke H*
I think the singing tree represents Sal's loss for her mother. She's remembering the times sitting under the tree with her mother. This may be the first time she's realizing how much she is missing her mother in a while. So maybe that's why she heard the singing tree. Alana
I think that there are many symbols in Walk Two Moons. However, there are a couple major symbols I want to touch on. One of the main symbols is blackberries. The blackberries represent Sal's mother and all the past memories of her; the blackberry kiss. I think the other symbol is the ying yang sign. For every example of bad, there is a positive outcome to it. For every example of good, there is a downside to it. It depends on which half of the glass you depend on most.
I felt that it was harder to find symbols in Walk Two Moons than The Giver. Blackberries always remind her of her mother so that might be a symbol of memories with her mom. I think Phoebe represents Sal's judgement of people. Sal doesn't like Mrs. Cadaver and Phoebe makes up a rumor about her before they actually know anything about her.
The blackberry kiss to me means memories of home, her mom and Bybanks, Kentucky, and the country. -Luca

Interesting thoughts, Jilly. Can the blackberries symbolize anything else?
DeleteThey can also symbolize memories of home, both good and bad ones.

Great thoughts, Maggie. What about all of the messages? And the voices she hears? What do you think these represent/symbolize?

I love your thought about nature, George! Can you think of any other references to or symbols of nature that may show the interconnection of life?
DeleteI agree with you. I also think that later in the book, their similarities in their personality will be a part of the story.
