Congratulations! You experienced your first HDS Harkness discussion as sixth graders. What else can you add to our discussion we had today on The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann? Please post your thoughts!

  1. What I found weird was that Aaron showed affection for Alex at the purge before he went to Wanted University. I think what Wanted University teaches kids about power, greed, and evil. I think that Artime University teaches about war for good and less deaths and more creativity. I found that out while seeing how Aaron talked to Alex during the war like as if he went crazy.

  2. One thing I found very interesting was on Pg. 21 Mr. Today said: How does it feel to be eliminated?". For me this would be very disturbing because I would think I died. Also another thing is that if I was in their shoes the first thought I would have would be about my family. I would be interested how other kid would feel that are my age. Written by Luca.

  3. Darcy: I was wondering why Alex wants the best for Aaron when Aaron doesn't really care about Alex. Alex wants Aaron to come to Artimé so he can have a better life, but all Aaron does is tell himself is that he's better than Alex. Aaron nearly kills Alex in the end. I think the author should make Alex not care about Aaron because there is no reason Alex should be looking out for Aaron anymore...

  4. I was thinking about the question,"Why doesn't anyone challenge High Priest Justine?", and I thought that the reason no one thinks to challenge High Priest Justine is that everyone is forced to think that High Priest Justine is doing the right thing for them and leading them to a good life, and they don't know what they're missing. If they knew what Artime was, then I think that they're opinions would differ. If High Priest Justine knew what it was like to live in her kingdom of Quill, I think she would change a few things.

  5. A few days ago, almost everybody said that they would be an Unwanted. Because of this, I thought I would share why I think I would be a Wanted. First of all, your life would be on the line. Yes, you could live YOLO for 13 years, but if you do something involving crazy creativity, you would just be killed earlier than that. Also, nobody would know better. All your main role models would be dull.

  6. Something I think we forgot to mention during the Harkness, was Aaron. On page 8, he says, "Yes, be careful father, or I'll have to report your insubordination for a comment like that". He already acts like he is far better than his parents. We can already see his coldness for people a lower class than him.

  7. Luke: Today in our Harkness discussion I thought we were pretty good for our first time, but we need a bunch of improvement.
    We need to:
-not talk while our other classmates are talking
    -talk quieter
    -stay on a topic longer
-ask a more detailed, deep question about the book

  8. I enjoyed reading the Unwanted's over the summer. I also like having Harkness discussions. During the Harkness discussion I was very quite. I was quite because the one time I tried to talk I got interrupted. The thing I wanted to say was that I wanted to add onto someones topic. I wanted to say that why did the high priest not fight Artime before when the war was because the hight priest knew about magic the whole time. Otherwise all I wanted to say is that I think our literature class needs to work on our Harkness discussion. I am also sort of frustrated because I didn't get to talk and I hope I get to talk next time.
