"Suzy and Leah" Discussion

What did you feel was particularly meaningful today during our class discussion of Jane Yolen's "Suzy and Leah"? Was there anything left out that you would wish to add?

  1. Dear Mrs. Johnson,
While I was reading Suzy and Leah, I thought about why everyone doesn't like Jews. Even in Romanesque times, they had ghettos for Jews. And through the Second World War, everyone was skeptical about Jews. I feel that Leah knows this and that's another reason why she is so protective.

  2. When people were talking about how Leah didn't eat and always gave Avi the food. I felt that Avi was treated like Leah's little brother and Leah felt like she owed it to Avi to eat. In one of Leah's diary entries Leah said to Mutti that she sometimes pretended that Avi was her brother. I think that applied to the food.

  3. Hello, I was thought that suzy and leah was a great book. I liked the format of how the two girls wrote in letter form which made up the story. I was unsure about the ending but then read it again and it made sense.

  4. When we read Suzzy and Leah I didn't think it was going to be the best story we have read but when I finished reading it i thought it was really good because it goes form two girls who don't have a strong relationship to a girl who now understands how the other feels.

  5. During our Harkness, I wished we could have talked more about the theme. I think "Don't judge a book by its cover" perfectly sums up the story. The girl's first impressions of each other seem to last until nearly the end of the story.

  6. Kate- I think Leah had a terrible attitude towards Suzy. Suzy was too young to realize it was harsh to bribe the kids with candy. Leah should have given Suzy a chance. Leah's attitude was the starter of Suzy's intension not to give Leah a dress. I liked the dairy format of the story, and wanted to bring it up today.

  7. During our Harkness discussion, I had a question but never got a chance to ask it. What do you think the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution were? I know that the resolution is when suzy apologized to Leah, but what do you guys think of the other parts of the story?

  8. I think the theme of this story is don't judge a book by its cover because you don't know their background or who they are. Luca

  9. i liked the short story although i thought it was a little confusing at times, when it kept jumping from suzy to leah then suzy talked twice in a row i got confused because i thought that it was leah once. we need to improve on our harkness discussion by slowing the pace down. we go way to fast and some people never get the chance to speak. others just speak every chance they have, and they need to speak only when they have something important. --Luke

  10. I think that Suzy and Leah didn't get each other at first but I knew that they would end up being great friends. When Suzy read Leah's diary, they got to know each other more, even though reading other peoples' diaries are bad. It helped their friendship grow.

  11. I think the girls definitely judged each other quickly without really getting to know one another. I understand that Leah doesn't trust the Americans especially because her own country turned on her. Suzy's reason to be hostile is another story. I think Suzy is just not sympathetic. -Darcy

  12. I think the setting really helps the theme because if they were't in Germany at first there wouldn't have been any Nazis.
If you had just read the first few paragraphs you might have thought the book was boring. If you keep going the story gets interesting. So don't judge a book by its cover.

  13. Nic- I wanted to mention that Leah had a horrible attitude about being friends with Suzy because she just kind of declined and ignored Suzy's friendship. But also I do have to say that Leah has the right to not trust anyone because her own country turned on her. Also I thought the harkness went well but it wasnt our strongest or best one.
